Answers to the most common questions about fundraising initiatives on LFX Crowdfunding.
Who can create an initiative?
Any open source project related to or affiliated with the Linux Foundation can apply. If you are unsure whether your project qualifies, contact your Linux Foundation programme manager before applying.
What types of initiatives are supported?
LFX Crowdfunding supports four types:
- Project — an open source software project seeking ongoing community funding
- Security Audit — a project seeking funds for a third-party security audit
- Event — a conference, meetup, or community event
- General Fund — general-purpose fundraising not tied to a specific project or event
How long does approval take?
The Linux Foundation team reviews each application manually. Approval times vary — you will be notified by email once your initiative is approved and live. You can check the current status on My Initiatives on LFX.
Can I edit my initiative after it is published?
Yes. Visit My Initiatives on LFX to update your initiative's name, description, logo, funding goal, beneficiaries, and fund distribution at any time. See Manage Your Initiative for steps.
Why is my initiative not visible to the public?
Only Published initiatives are visible. If your initiative is in Submitted or Pending status it is still under review. If it is Hidden, it has been temporarily removed from public view — contact the Linux Foundation team for assistance.
Can I add other people to receive funds?
Yes. You can add beneficiaries during initiative creation or by editing your initiative after publication. Each beneficiary receives access to submit expense reports against initiative funds. See Reimbursements for details.
What happens if my initiative is declined?
You will be notified by email. Contact your Linux Foundation programme manager to understand why and whether reapplication is possible.
